In fact, here's my latest Sixties Related article, hot off the press:

Fallout from the Sixties

As a child growing up in the Sixties, the Cold War was as palpable a dark cloud as the mushroom blast over Hiroshima. StilI fresh in my mind are clips of Nikita Kruschev banging his shoe on a lecturn while delivering the line, "We will bury you!" Then there was the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 where President Kennedy proved Russia placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, and imposed a naval quarantine around Cuba to force their removal. Scary stuff! Since the threat of nuclear annihilation seemed imminent, one survival antidote was that of the nuclear fallout shelter stocked with civil defense biscuits, canned goods, and booklets suggesting exercises while confined.

While these fears lay dormant inside me throughout 1962, I was a sixth grader at Lincoln Community School. Our school could not accomodate the town's growing population, so fifth and sixth graders were relegated to the Maccoll Field barn on Breakneck Hill Rd. Every Friday before school let out we had to empty our desks and stow away our books and implements inside a pillowcase so the desks could be stored in a corner to clear the floor for square dancing. Nevertheless, we country hicks were hip to the drill--the one which prepared us for a nuclear holocaust. "Fallout shelters? We don't need no stinkin' fallout shelters!" Our desks would protect us!

When Miss G gave the signal, we'd crouch beneath our desks despite the wobbly legs on some. In that lowly position one could glimpse the topsy turvy world of loose crayons, books teetering on the edge, points of scissors and no. 2 yellow lead pencils facing outward, along with the occasional wad of gum strategically stuck underneath for a rainy day. The crux of the situation is that we all bought into this line of safety, confident our rickety desks would save us from heavy debris and radioactive particles in the air until our parents could come get us. I hereby nominate the school desk to be added to the memorabilia housed in any Cold War museum for the illusionary safety net it provided during a time of social unrest.

Latest Review: COFFEE TIME ROMANCE

$15.95
ORDER HERE:
Romance/Women’s Fiction
Rating: 4 Cups

Carla Matteo has recently taken a break from her job at Matteo Rubbish Removal. She and her husband, Joe, started the business shortly after their marriage and Carla is ready for a break.

Scents are like a drug to Carla. She takes particular care in both buying and wearing her perfumes. She finds that every memory and situation can be brought forth by a certain smell.

When Alice moves in next door to the Matteo’s, Carla welcomes her to the neighborhood, but does not plan on spending time with the newcomer. Just the name Alice brings back bad memories of her childhood friend also named Alice, who took a bad turn. Carla must confront her guilt over Alice and the mystery of her father’s death and move on to the next step in her life. She discovers a website for scent aficionados and enjoys writing reviews of perfumes as well as corresponding with a new friend in Australia.

Underlying Notes is a light and fun read. Lusciously described, the scents mentioned in this novel take on a life of their own. I could almost smell rose-filled air as I was reading. The characters are diverse, yet complimentary to the underlying notes of Carla’s life. The reader can easily be sucked into small town Rhode Island. Written in the first person, Ms. Pasco has the gift of beautiful prose that is a joy to read.

Rave Reviews for UNDERLYING NOTES

#1: Underlying Notes is a well-blended concoction of the day-to-day events that shape one's life. Comfort food for your heart, it is mixed with flavorful characters that stay with you long after the feast.

Certain signposts of life can be seen only in the rearview mirror, others come at you head on; so learns Carla Matteo, a married, fifty-something woman defining her second act of life. Carla incorporates her love for fragrances and their various scents, or "notes," to cope with the myriad of pitfalls and successes that happen to all of us.

A long-time fan of suspense thrillers, I stepped outside my comfort zone with this romantic offering. To my delight, I have discovered a new, favorite author in Eva Pasco. Like the warmest of neighbors, Pasco invites you into her main character's home, directing the reader's gaze along the mantle where pictures of friends and relatives, past and present, line the shelves of her imagination. Crafting elegant prose, your literary hostess shares the fabric of their lives, and strangers soon become second family.

My endearing attachment to a fictional character is a testament to Pasco's writing skill. A few scenes had me overcome, and I had to put the book down. This story will stay with me for a long time, and has earned a place on my top shelf.

#2: A glowing book review from Veronica at Strictly Romance Reviews:

UNDERLYING NOTES by Eva Pasco
Charles River Press, Inc.
DECEMBER 2007
Contemporary Romance
Rating: 5 Moonbeams

Carla Matteo copes with life by "taking to the bottle"— glass goddesses funneling perfume! During a mid-life renaissance, the juice provides a hook for Carla to find her own niche while the ominous rose note in Paloma Picasso forces her to confront a troubled past.

This is a truly poignant story of a woman's remarkable journey to find meaning to her life. Carla Matteo struggles to find her place in the world. As she delves deeper into her obsession with smelling perfumes Carla goes through the emotions that will finally put the ghosts of her past to rest.

Eva Pasco brings us a new novel, UNDERLYING NOTES, giving readers a glimpse into a woman's private life, history and realizing where her true happiness lies.
There are many reasons I enjoyed this book. One being that no matter what was going on with Carla's husband, Joe—he never once turned his back on her. He was supportive all the way even if they got into fights. Not to mention the fact that despite Carla going through this crisis, she always managed to be there for her family and friends. I also can't help but mention and love this quote from Carla to Joe.

"That was a Sicilian message from the girl next door."
I give this a rating of 5 Moonbeams.

#3: 4 Roses Review: Romance Reader at Heart

Carla Matteo is undergoing a midlife crisis. With no children, a dream career that she'd given up to make her husband happy, and a job she isn't fond of, it's time to make a change. She tells her husband she is bowing out of her secretarial job at the rubbish removal company they built together and tries to find something else to do with her life.

The problem is, Carla isn't sure what to do next. She has a scarred psyche, between her father's strange death and the loss of a dear friend that has left her feeling guilty. Her only hobby is perfumes, and this grows into an obsession as she throws herself into a website bulletin board with similar fanatics and considers her next step.

Life is always changing, and Carla discovers this as an old friend plans his relocation and a new friend moves next door. Carla's not very good at relationships, but she needs to find her footing both in her past and her present. UNDERLYING NOTES is a prose poem as much as a women's fiction novel. Carla tells us her own story and it is suffused with the power of the "juice"--all the perfumes she loves so well. Reading this novel is a heady experience!

All About Eva's UNDERLYING NOTES

More than a cocktail for hot flashes and fluctuating libido, Underlying Notes strews crumbs of callousness, blame, self-sacrifice, repression, and restlessness along the unmarked trails of introspection and reinvention winding through Carla Matteo’s journey to find her own niche in the Second Act of Life.

Fragrance addiction numbs the pain of her father’s tragic death, wards off the sting of a severed adolescent friendship, fortifies her against the stench of employment inside her husband’s waste management company on land purported to have been swindled from a downtrodden pig farmer by her shady father-in-law, and wafts through fantasies of having a fling with hubby’s paesano. During a mid-life renaissance, the "juice" offers incentive for Carla to reinvent herself, while the ominous rose note in Paloma Picasso forces her to confront a troubled past.

Carla Matteo’s self-deprecating wit and candor navigate the reader past Rhode Island’s affluent coastal communities, prominent landmarks, cherished institutions, and olive oil spills of the underworld as she reveals her quirks, inhibitions, anxieties, and fears. Carla’s account is as multilayered as the fragrances she wears to permeate back stories that illuminate the present and surrender underlying secrets one morsel at a time.

10 GOOD REASONS

I never need a good reason to pick up a book to read, but I’m offering at least 10 reasons why you should consider my Romance/Women’s Fiction novel for your spring fling or beach blanket bingo summer reading:

1. The CHARACTERS are as real as you or me. They cope with or attempt to combat quirks, inhibitions, anxieties, and fears on a daily basis.

2. The PLOT is grounded in reality-- propelled by accumulative daily minutia, introspective thoughts, struggles with romantic temptation, strewn with crumbs of callousness, blame, self-sacrifice, repression, and restlessness.

3. The SETTING is flavored with Rhode Island--distinct as our own "clear broth chowda"-- affluent coastal communities, prominent landmarks, cherished institutions, and olive oil spills of the underworld.

4. There is life after fifty for women-- passion, romance, vibrancy, and adventure still abound.

5. The novel is sprinkled with nostalgic confetti from the sixties: fishnet stockings, Beatles, Vietnam, tunes, TV shows, cars...

6. The book is a page turner as the title has multiple meanings where the reader must uncover its underlying secrets. Evasive behaviors create their own hard calluses that gradually slough off.

7. Fragrance is the driving force behind the novel-- guaranteed, you will not only acquire knowledge, but an appreciation for its ethereal persuasion.

8. You will find yourself on an emotional roller coaster laughing out loud or clouding up with tears.

9. The book is superbly written with lyrical prose--don’t take my word for it--read my RAVE REVIEWS.

10. You might just embrace the tenets of your own life after reading this.

It's About TIME (Magazine)

Unsolicited by me, TIME news reporter, Jeninne Lee- St. John, conducted a lengthy telephone interview on Leap Day. Apparently she had been trying to track me down and was able to do so through Jonathan Womack, my publisher, at Charles River Press. Ms. St. John delved into the driving force of my Romance/Women’s Fiction novel, UNDERLYING NOTES-- fragrance addiction-- for her upcoming article on ’fragrance’...

You can read the entire article, SCENTS AND SENSITIVITY by clicking on the link below:
http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1720096,00.html

For your convenience, I have copied and pasted the first paragraph of Ms. St. John’s article--I cannot believe that I am the "opening act"!!!

Eva Pasco, who loosely based her novel Underlying Notes on her fragrance addiction, has boxes and trunks and specially made cabinets all over her house for her perfume collection. She calls herself a "fragrance floozy," but she’s no eccentric kook. At least half a million people like her subscribe to blogs like Sniffapalooza and Now Smell This, virtual clubhouses for those who love perfumes, particularly hard-to-find niche brands.

Ms. St. John’s article is in living color in the March 17, 2008 print version of TIME.
